HISTORY

The Fergus Falls Area Family YMCA has served the community for over 50 years. The YMCA began as a one-man operation with a jukebox and a pool table in an old bowling alley on Union Avenue in 1967.

In 1972, the Y moved to its present location and began offering programs and services. In the late 1970’s, the YMCA added two racquetball courts, elevator and an indoor swimming pool.

By the mid-1990s, the Y had outgrown its building and plans for an expansion began. By 2000, the Y had raised more than $3.3 million in donations and pledges from 567 individuals and groups. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on October 7, 1999, and a year later during the first week of October 2000, an open house was held celebrating the completion of the expansion.

The first Annual Giving Campaign was initiated in 2002 for 2003, with 213 contributors pledging over $63,000 to the YMCA for support for scholarships and program development. In 2004, the Annual Giving Campaign was renamed after Cliff and Doris Maxwell. The campaign was re-named the "Youth Partners Campaign" in 2017.

Today this 90,000 sq. ft. has over 4,000 members and serves thousands of people on an annual basis. Over 100 staff members and numerous volunteers work daily to fulfill our mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
